5 days Sahara and Berber Culture Tour
First day: Fes – Ifrane – Midelt – Ziz – Arfoud – Merzouga
Pick up from your Fes riad/Hotel at 8:00 a.m by your driver, departure to Merzouga where the sand see dunes of Erg Chebbi are located. An 8 hours journey that takes you across the Atlas Mountains to the southern Morocco’s largest oasis; Tafilalet; composed of many villages, palmeries and 2 main Saharan towns, Erfoud and Rissani. We will make many stops along the road at the alpine town of Ifrane, Azrou cedar forest where are the monkeys, Midelt for lunch and Ziz valley at the panoramic and impressive views over the palm trees, the green valley in the middle of the Sahara. Then we’ll head for the Erg Chebbi sand dunes. We continue deeper into the desert landscape, until the dunes appear in the middle of nowhere. Dinner & Overnight in a hotel with pool at the dune line of Erg Chebbi to relax for the first night.
Second day: Erg Chebbi Off-road – Nomads – Merzouga – Camel trekking.
After breakfast, we will drive to explore the tiny villages around Erg Chebbi dunes such as ( Hassi Labied, Merdani , Khamlia , M’fis ) on our way to Kamlia we expect to meet locals showing their desert foxes. you may also encounter desert reptiles and mammals, in Khamlia, known as the village of black people who were slaves coming from Sudan,you will be hospitably welcomed with a cup of tea (Berber Whiskey) while enjoying their spiritual Gnawa music. Leaving Khamlia our next stop is on the panoramic view of golden dunes near the Algerian border, we may stop for Picnic lunch under the shadow of a tree before continuing to visit a Nomad family, who are living under Berber tent and who are taking care for herd of cattle, goats and camels, you will be introduced to family members and getting to know about their way of life while enjoying the taste of a nice cup of tea. After these you will have the chance to visit the sites of black volcanic rocks. continuing on, you’ll reach the panorama near Yasmina lac where you will be amazed with the scene of the dunes in addition to the nearby lake (springtime) then we will back to Merzouga, after relaxing few minuts you will leave some of your luggage in a room in the hotel and take what you need in small bag then we will ride the camels into the erg chebbi sand dunes for (40 – 1:30min) ,when we arrive to the camp take a SANDBOARD and walk to a highest sand dune to see the sunset ,we will spend the night in a camp (Nomad Tents) with drums music in the middle of the Sahara, this is a great opportunity to take lovely pictures of the sunset and sunrise
Third day: Erg Chebbi – Rissani – Arfoud – Todra Gorges
After having breakfast, camel trek back to the hotel at the dune line for a quick shower. We leave the Sahara desert dunes of Erg Chebbi, an off-road drive across the hamada (black Desert) to get to the Sahara town of Rissani, optional visit of the animated local market. Afterwards, we head north to Erfoud that is known for the fossils; here we can stop to visit a fossil workshop before we continue to the impressive Todra canyons, known for rock climbing, where you can hike before we check into to the hotel, Dinner and overnight.
Fourth day: Todra Gorges – Dades Valley – Skoura – Ouarzazate
Breakfast at the hotel, we begin our journey along the road of 1000 Thousand Kasbahs, since there are enormous kasbahs on both sides of the road. Some of those old fortified houses are restored but unfortunately a lot of them are ruins. We pass through Dades valley and go up to the mountainous area through an off-road trail where many Berber villages and few nomads living in caves, here we will have the chance to visit one of this families and take a look at their daily life and their main activity “Looking after herds of goats & cheep”. We will be impressed by the landscapes of the colorful rose valley before we reach Skoura palm grove. 45km further, we reach Ouarzazate for the dinner and overnight at the hotel.
Fifth day: Ouarzazate – Ait Benhaddou – High Atlas – Marrakech
After breakfast, we can enjoy a visit of cinema sets & studios located in Ouarzazate which is known as Hollywood of Africa. Afterwards we will visit the universal Heritage Site of Ait Benhaddou Kasbah as it has been named by UNESCO in 1987. Ait Benhaddou is the World Heritage site that has been used as a backdrop for more than 20 films including “Gladiator” “Indiana Jones” and “Lawrence of Arabia”. Enjoy a walk to explore the traditional Moroccan style of architecture in which the Kasbahs are built. We continue our way to Marrakesh through the High Atlas Mountains and Tizi n’Tichka pass. Break for lunch in the middle of the Atlas Mountains. Drop off at your Marrakech Riad/Hotel.
